Annie Elizabeth Stainsby was the third child of Thomas Stainsby & Mary Ann Henderson (nee Corner) born December 3rd, 1873 at Bishop Auckland.
By 1881 Annie was living with her mother who was married to John Carter & also living with them were her brothers Thomas & Stephen & sister Mary Stainsby at Lumley St, Middlesbrough. Also there was half-brother John Henderson & half-sister Hannah Carter. Marriage records indicate that mother Mary Ann did not marry John Carter until 1883.
The school registers book for Appleby primary school show that Annie & her younger brother Stephen Stainsby were admitted in October 1886. Their address was given as Bongate, Appleby. Her father Thomas was known to have lived in Appleby around this time.
In 1891 Annie was living at home with her mother & step-father John & Mary was a domestic servant. Her sister & brothers were also still at home, as was John Henderson. Another 4 Carter children had arrived – Joseph (9), Robert (6), Alice M (5) & Violet (3). They were all living at 22 Albert Mews, Middlesbrough.
Annie married Edward Savage in July-September 1896 in Brighton, Sussex. Edward was born 1864/5 in Fareham, Hants. Edward had previously been married to Clementina Rose Whitcomb & they had at least 4 children. Clementina died in 1895.
In 1901 Annie & Edward were living at 50 Astil St, Stapenhill, Staffordshire & Edward was a journeyman baker. With them was Walter Savage (14) a son of Edward’s first marriage & he was described as a baker’s lad. Annie & Edward had 2 children by this time – Edward C (3) & Mary E (1), but tragically Mary died 2 years later, aged just 3.
At the time of the 1911 census Annie was listed as head of the household at 10 St Mary’s Place, Brighton. Edward was not at home & his whereabouts are uncertain. With Annie were children Edward Cyril, Arthur Lawrence (9), & Neta Murial (7). It was noted that Annie had had 5 children, only 3 of whom were still living. Boarding with them was a 74 year old widower Alfred Cape.
